WAX FAQ

You got questions, we got answers!

We know waxing can seem intimidating.

Especially if it is your first time, and if you simply have no one else to ask!

Here are some top questions ask by first time clients.

HOW LONG DOES MY HAIR NEED TO BE FOR A WAX?

Your hair needs to be as long as an uncooked grain of your standard white rice. This would equal out to a few cm in length!

You want to grow out your hair for about 1 1/2 - 2 weeks before your wax.

DO NOT SHAVE right before your wax appointment.

CAN I WAX ON MY CYCLE?

Yes!

You absolutely can get a wax during your cycle. You just need to have in some type of menstrual control (Ex. Tampon or Cup) to stop the bleeding while you are at your appointment.

Our staff is fully trained and 100% comfortable with waxing clients on their cycles. It's a personal choice of course, and you can reschedule your appointment if need be.

DO I NEED TO DO ANYTHING TO MY SKIN BEFORE A WAX?

You can prep your skin by keeping it hydrated prior to your wax appointment by applying a light weight non scented & dye free lotion.

Gentle exfoliation with a scrub (sea salt or sugar) is also recommended to do a day before your wax to remove any excessive dead skin cells and to loosen any ingrown hairs.

(PRO TIP - Keeping the skin well hydrated will decrease discomfort during your waxes!)

WHAT SHOULD I NOT DO BEFORE A WAX?

While waxing is pretty routine these days there are a few things you want to avoid doing right before (24 hrs or less). By avoiding these things you are reducing the risk of discomfort and skin irritations.

You should not:

Exercise

Sun Tan / Spray Tan

Deep Exfoliation

Take a hot bath / shower

WHAT SHOULD I NOT DO AFTER A WAX?

You should not do anything that will cause excessive Heat, Friction or Sweat for the first 24-48 hrs post wax. Keep your garments breathable, and not restrictive on the skin.

This includes but is not limited to:

Exercise

Hot Baths / Hot Tubs

Swimming (of any kind)

Sun Tanning / Spray Tanning

Exfoliation

Sexual Activity

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I BE WAXING?

You want to keep a 3 - 4 week schedule (1x a month) to see the full, and long term benefits of waxing. We need the hair to be in the 2nd stage of growth to continuously disrupt the grow cycles. Over time this will result in finer hair texture, and eventually no hair at all!

By coming once every 3 - 4 weeks we are able to target that 2nd stage perfectly.

(PRO TIP - It also hurts less by maintaining your appointments!)

WILL WAXING MAKE THE HAIR THICKER?

No!

It is actually just the opposite. Waxing creates a thinner, finer, and ultimately softer hair because we are slowly destroying the follicle at the source. This weakens the cells creating the softer feel, and eventually no hair growth!

WILL I STILL GET BUMPS?

As much as we would love to tell you no, the answer is yes.

Yes, you can still experience bumps, ingrown hairs, and breakouts from waxing. At the end of the day waxing can still be a skin irritant, and we are changing the structure of your hair.

BUT you're in luck!

We understand ingrown hair, skin care, and what it takes to treat / prevent the issues that can arise from waxing. We have services designed specifically for your skin pre and post wax!

HOW SHOULD I CARE FOR MY SKIN AFTER A WAX?

You need to be doing these 3 things after a wax, and for the duration of your waxing journey!

You need to be keeping your skin:

  • Clean

  • Exfoliated

  • Hydrated

This needs to be done on a daily basis for best skin and waxing results.

Your BARE Wax Esthetician will go over everything you need at your appointment.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO START A WAXING ROUTINE?

Anytime really!

But the cooler months are ideal because your activity level is lower. Most clients can make the commitment of keeping a monthly schedule, and allowing their hair to grow to appropriate length. In cooler months we also see less irritation on the skin.

If you are looking to wax for a big life event we recommend starting a routine 4 months in advance.

HOW BAD DOES WAXING HURT?

While waxing is not going to feel great, it isn't going to kill you either!

Wax has come a long way over the years. It is no longer your mamas hot sticky wax! However we can't tell you how much or little it is going to hurt as everyone interprets pain differently.

Most of our clients would rate (1 being the best 10 being the worst) about a 2-3 on the discomfort level.

WHAT KIND OF WAX DO YOU USE?

We are a hard wax only wax establishment.

We have chosen an all natural vegan wax that is effective at picking up every hair, and is super gentle on the skin. You will never leave feeling sticky or with overly red irritated skin. Even the most sensitive skin types are safe with this wax. We use the same hard wax from head to toe!

The absolute best waxing experience I’ve ever had! She got the job done fast and her technique is awesome! Pain was a lot less compared to other experiences I’ve had at other places.

Angelica Jimenez

I've been getting waxes in different places, but this one has been the Best!! Jacquelyn was very knowledgeable about many different products. She knows skin types when she sees them! Loved it, definitely will be going again!
